The SUMR (Sackville Undergraduate Music Research) Lab was formed in 2021 based on our department’s growing student-centered research and creative activities programme. The SUMR Lab has four satellite labs, directed by Mount Allison Music faculty, and organized according to individual research specialization and based on our research projects.
We are the Sackville Undergraduate Music Research Lab
The SUMR Lab website provides a hub to showcase student achievements, activities, and outreach within our community and beyond. Our projects offer employment for a varying number of undergraduate students each year (typically, five to fifteen). Students work within local, national, and international research and creative activity teams, fostering important networking opportunities, high-level experiences, skill building, and leading to early-career publications, presentations, and performances. In addition to working on faculty-driven research projects, students also create and receive mentorship for their own projects, oftentimes collaborating with faculty and other students.
As testament to the success of this model is the return of the same student research assistants (RAs) to our labs in leadership positions over multiple years. In this sense, the Mount Allison SUMR Lab creates a community of learning, focussed on research and creative activity that supports students not only during, but also well beyond their studies at Mount Allison University. The website design and maintenance are supported by Linda Pearse’s Canada Research Chair in Music, Contact, and Conflict.
